Brookvale settlement Prestwich
Project: Brookvale settlement Prestwich.
Having constructed substantial numbers of buildings at Brookvale settlement Prestwich, it was noticed by staff that occasionally the foul sewerage would back up the outfall and cause discharge problems within the building. This problem occurred because the local pumping station managed by United Utilities could not always handle the amount of discharge from the surrounding area.
To resolve the problem, a series of holding tanks were constructed in reinforced concrete which, when the pumping station failed to cope, would act as a reservoir to capture excess discharge for short periods and thus prevent a health and safety problem occurring within the settlement.
The excavation had to be sheet piled and supported with a proprietary system to retain the integrity of the surrounding ground and then reinstated to the original surface finishes with appropriate cast iron access lids incorporated.
As the works were carried out below the local groundwater table, a pumping system had to be installed throughout the contract duration to draw the ground water from a sump constructed within the excavation at the lowest point.
