A substantial a steel framed factory in Burnley was burnt down and substantial collateral damage to remaining structures was sustained.
The fire caused substantial areas of steelwork to be demolished and foundations, drainage and hard paved areas had to be replaced. Approximately 100,000 square feet of the plant was damaged (1/3 of the whole footprint) and included an internal two storey office block, canteen, showers.
Due to innovative methods of operation, the client was able to use 2/3 of the factory within 8 days of the fire breaking out as the fire was controlled and works completed in the damaged area now isolated from the now operational working area.
The setting up of a steel fabrication facility on site speeded up the job and saved the insurance company several million pounds due to mitigation of loss of revenue. The works included the installation of a 19M high storage facility and new sprinkler system and large water storage tank on site.
The value of the project was in the order of £2.5 million.
